Origin

Lake Baikal is one of the oldest lakes. Some geologist’s estimates its age at 15 million years, other is more cautious in their speculations, but they all agree that Lake Baikal is one of the world oldest lakes. It was definitely formed in the Tertiary Era. At a time when the surface of the Earth was being shaped and the highest mountain formed. The earth’s crust spilt and a trench was formed a deep abyss which slowly filled with water. A long and deep lake was formed, today’s Lake Baikal.

Everyone who visits in Lake Baikal is enchanted by the breathtaking scenery of its shores. And it is just as fascinating in term of geographical records. Its depth reached 1747m off Olchon Island, according to recent measurement making it the deepest of all the world lakes, Lake Tanganyika in Africa is more than 300m shallower than Baikal.

Its water surface is 455m above sea level, and the bottom reached 1286m below sea level, such inland depressions, reaching below sea level and flooded with water, are you called crypto depressions. Lake Baikal is not only the deepest lake, but also the biggest crypto depression on our planet.

It not only deep, it is also very large, it is 636km long distance like between London and Frankfurt or Paris. And its surface area almost equal that of the Netherlands, it s eight largest lake in the world and largest fresh water lake on the biggest contented in Asia.

Because of its depth, the volume of the water in lake is also extraordinary. It’s estimated at 23,600 cubic kilometers. Which is more than one tenth of the world’s reservoir of fresh water? It ranks first among all lakes in this respect. The lake is fed by more than 300 rivers, stream and brooks and it has only one outflow the river Angara a tributary of the huge Siberian River.

There are yet more records Lake Baikal have almost no water pollution. The water is so transparent that all details are perfectly visible to a  depth of 10 to 15m is good at 25 to 30m and a submerged white disc can be recognized at a depth of 40m. The water is so clean except near some settlements that is drinkable. But only the toughest swimmers would dare to go for swim. Even in high summer the water temperature is never more than 14 c.
